Exporting to Spain

Spain on the world map
The EU's fourth-largest economy, one of Europe's leading solar markets, and the natural commercial bridge to Latin America. Valencia is the largest container port in the Mediterranean, and the compliance stack is the EU rulebook plus Spain's three-stream EPR registry. The market is genuinely open to new suppliers, but payment terms run longer than in northern Europe and the channel is regional. Best suited to sellers with strong certification documents, a Spanish-speaking contact and the patience to build regional distribution.

Import scale and growth by HS line is not on this page yet. We are wiring the customs statistics for each category and will add them here; until then we quote the figures per enquiry rather than publish an estimate.

“Potential buyers” means the buyers we have verified and listed in our own directory — not every importer in the country. Buyer roles are our own grouping of the roles recorded in that directory. (34 of these records do not yet carry a recorded buyer role.)

2. Entry gate

Spain applies the EU product rulebook in full, plus a national producer-responsibility regime organised into three streams — packaging, WEEE and batteries — under a single producer registry. The CE mark is the shared ticket; the EPR registration is the Spanish-specific work, and it is enforced at the point of sale as well as at import.

RequirementStatusWhat it involvesLead timeCostLast verified
CE markingMandatoryElectrical products fall under the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), EMC Directive (2014/30/EU) and, where radio is present, the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU). EU authorised representativeRequired for non-EU sellersNon-EU manufacturers must appoint an EU-established authorised representative or importer to hold the declarations and to act as the registered producer for the Spanish EPR streams1–2 weeksPendingPending
EPR registration — packagingMandatoryPackaging placed on the Spanish market, including shipping packaging, must be registered and reported through an authorised collective system such as Ecoembes, and the producer must be entered in the national producer registry2–6 weeksPendingPending
EPR registration — WEEE (RAEE)MandatoryElectrical and electronic equipment must be registered under the Spanish RAEE scheme, joined to a collective system, and carry the crossed-out wheeled-bin marking, with take-back and reporting obligations2–6 weeksPendingPending
EPR registration — batteries (RPAP) & EU Battery RegulationMandatory for batteriesBatteries must be registered under the Spanish battery producer scheme (RPAP) with separate take-back duties. Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 adds a carbon footprint declaration and a digital battery passport for industrial batteries of 2 kWh or more, EV batteries and LMT batteries, mandatory from 18 February 2027 — the EU importer carries the obligation where the manufacturer is outside the EULong-lead — plan 12+ monthsPending2027-02

Spanish-language labelling & importer of recordMandatoryConsumer product information, safety notices and the WEEE marking must be in Spanish. A Spanish or EU-established importer of record is required; the exporter cannot act as importer for a commercial entry——Pending
Spain is CE plus a three-stream EPR registry: duty and VAT are low and predictable, and the market is open — but the packaging, WEEE and battery registrations are separate obligations, and payment terms run longer than in northern Europe. Sequence the work as CE and an EU representative, then EPR registration, then regional channel.

Certification, tariff and clearance figures change. Every row above carries a verification date, and the current requirement is confirmed with your nominated local agent before each shipment.

How to use this list: do not mass-mail. Spanish procurement is relationship-led and regional — Madrid, Valencia, Catalonia and Andalusia each run their own distributor networks, and a Spanish-speaking contact opens doors faster than any price list.

4. Demand and import profile

Select your HS code and this block shows the import performance of your own category in Spain — not the country's macro numbers.

Import size & growth

Example: Spain is one of Europe's fastest-growing solar markets, and the inverter and storage categories track utility-scale build-out and residential self-consumption growth.

Source-country mix

Example: Germany, China, France, the Netherlands and Italy lead the source list, with Chinese share highest in inverters and portable storage.

Price band

Example: Spanish buyers are price-aware and negotiate hard, but they move quickly once a supplier is qualified, and a Spanish-speaking contact is a decisive advantage.

6. Logistics and customs

Main gateways: Valencia (the largest container port in the Mediterranean), Algeciras (Europe's busiest transshipment port) and Barcelona, with Bilbao for the north
Valenciaport handled a record 5.66m TEU in 2025, driven partly by strong China import growth
Sailings from China typically 30–40 days; Valencia and Barcelona are the usual calls for Iberian destinations
Common hold-ups: missing EPR registration, non-Spanish labelling, and customs valuation queries
The EU customs union means goods already in free circulation in another member state move to Spain without further duty

Transit and throughput figures change; treat as indicative and confirm before quoting.

7. Payment, currency and tax

Dominant method: SEPA credit transfer; T/T for first orders
L/C is used more than in northern Europe, and documentary collections appear
Invoice in EUR (or USD); the euro is freely convertible
Payment terms run longer than in northern Europe — 60–90 days is not unusual, and Spanish law caps payment periods in commercial transactions
Import VAT at 21% is recoverable by a VAT-registered business, so it is a cash-flow item rather than a cost

8. Localisation and communication

These are the details nobody tells you, and one mistake can cost you a customer.

Metric
Electrical specs are metric (mm², V, Hz 50)
Spanish business is warm, direct and relationship-led, and decisions often depend on personal trust rather than process. Two practical points: payment terms run longer than in northern Europe, so price the financing into the quote; and August is effectively closed, so plan the sales calendar around it. A Spanish-speaking contact changes the conversation.

9. Risks and timing

Medium
Payment terms — Terms of 60–90 days are common. Use T/T or secured terms until a payment record is established, and price the financing cost into the quotation.
Medium
EPR registration — The packaging, WEEE and battery streams are three separate registrations under the national producer registry. Gaps can stop sales after the goods have landed.
Medium
Competition — The solar and storage market is crowded and price-competitive, with strong domestic distributors and pan-European players.
Low
Tariffs — Duty is low under the EU common external tariff; the commercial risk sits in payment terms, channel and compliance, not in tariffs.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need beyond the CE mark to sell in Spain?

The CE mark is the shared EU requirement. Spain adds a producer-responsibility regime organised into three streams — packaging (Ecoembes and the national producer registry), WEEE (RAEE) and batteries (RPAP) — each requiring registration and periodic reporting.

What is the import duty and VAT?

Spain applies the EU common external tariff; the average applied MFN rate is around 1.95% (2022), and electrical machinery is often at or near zero — confirm at HS-code level. Import VAT (IVA) is charged at the 21% standard rate on the customs value plus duty, and is recoverable by a VAT-registered business.

My product contains a lithium battery — is there anything extra?

Yes. Batteries must be registered under the Spanish RPAP scheme with separate take-back duties, and Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 adds a carbon footprint declaration and a digital battery passport for industrial batteries of 2 kWh or more, EV batteries and LMT batteries, mandatory from 18 February 2027. Where the manufacturer is outside the EU, the importer carries the obligation.

What payment terms are normal?

SEPA credit transfer is standard for established buyers, with T/T on first orders. Terms of 60–90 days are not unusual in Spain, longer than in northern Europe — price the financing cost in. Invoice in EUR (or USD).

Can I be the importer of record?

In practice, no. A Spanish or EU-established importer of record is required, and the EPR streams also need an EU-established registered producer. Most non-EU sellers work through a Spanish importer or distributor.

Which port should I ship to?

Valencia is the largest container port in the Mediterranean and the usual choice, with Algeciras for transshipment and southern destinations and Barcelona for Catalonia. Tell us the final destination and we will quote to the right port.
