Exporting to Senegal

Senegal on the world map
A stable, euro-pegged West African market and the gateway to the Sahel, with a government-led infrastructure programme that has kept demand for power and telecom equipment high. Import demand is narrower than Côte d'Ivoire's but more project-driven, which suits suppliers who can bid into tenders. The same two pre-shipment documents apply.

1. Your category in Senegal

Pick your category and this section shows what we actually hold for Senegal: how many potential buyers we have verified, what roles they play in the supply chain, and how well they fit. Switch back to All industries at any time.

Import scale and growth by HS line is not on this page yet. We are wiring the customs statistics for each category and will add them here; until then we quote the figures per enquiry rather than publish an estimate.

“Potential buyers” means the buyers we have verified and listed in our own directory — not every importer in the country. Buyer roles are our own grouping of the roles recorded in that directory. (1 of these records do not yet carry a recorded buyer role.)

2. Entry gate

Senegal applies the WAEMU common external tariff and, like its neighbours, requires a certificate of conformity for regulated goods and a cargo tracking note issued before departure. Because a large share of demand comes from public projects, the additional practical gate is the tender's own qualification requirements.

RequirementStatusWhat it involvesLead timeCostLast verified
Certificate of conformityMandatory (regulated goods)Conformity verified against the applicable Senegalese or WAEMU standard by an approved body before shipment.1–3 weeksPer shipmentPending
Cargo tracking note (BSC)MandatoryThe bordereau de suivi des cargaisons must be issued before the vessel departs. It is checked at clearance and cannot be obtained retroactively without cost.2–5 daysPer shipmentPending
Public tender qualificationFor public-sector buyersWhere the end customer is a public body, the tender sets its own documentary requirements — often including a local agent, attested references and a bid bond. Read the tender file before quoting.Per tenderBid bondPending
Tariff (MFN)Always appliesAverage applied MFN tariff around 12.8%; the rate depends on the HS line and must be confirmed line by line at HS-code level.—On customs valuePending
Tariff (preference)Not available for Chinese originSenegal applies the WAEMU common external tariff and has no free trade agreement with China. EU-origin goods benefit from the economic partnership agreement.——Pending

Senegal is a well-run, euro-pegged market where the practical gate is often the tender file rather than the customs file. Decide whether you are selling to a distributor or into a project — the two need different preparation.

Certification, tariff and clearance figures change. Every row above carries a verification date, and the current requirement is confirmed with your nominated local agent before each shipment.

3. Buyers and channel partners

Leading buyers and channel partners

Every company below is a real business in Senegal taken from our own buyer research, and we have verified that its website is reachable. Names and business types are public; decision-makers, direct emails and phone numbers are reserved for members of the Buyer Directory.

How to use this list: do not mass-mail. Senegalese demand is heavily project- and tender-driven, so the useful first question is whether the buyer is procuring for themselves or for a public project. The two paths need different preparation.

4. Demand and import profile

Select your HS code and this block shows the import performance of your own category in Senegal — not the country's macro numbers.

Import size & growth

Example: imports of this category run at a double-digit share of the market's total and are growing faster than overall imports.

Source-country mix

Example: China is the largest source, ahead of regional and EU suppliers.

Illustrative calculation only. It excludes anti-dumping duty, excise, port storage and any category-specific surcharge. Confirm the duty rate and local charges with your forwarder before making a commitment.

6. Logistics and customs

Main gateways: Dakar (the historic regional port) and the new Ndayane deep-water terminal
Direct sailings from China typically 35–45 days; many services tranship via Tanger Med or Algeciras
Typical clearance 3–5 days with both pre-shipment documents in order
Common hold-ups: missing cargo tracking note, invoice and certificate details not matching, missing French label
Dakar also serves landlocked Sahel markets, so cargo can be held for transit formalities

Clearance-day figures change with congestion and policy; treat as indicative and confirm before quoting.

7. Payment, currency and tax

Dominant method: T/T with a deposit, or documentary credit
The CFA franc is pegged to the euro; invoice in EUR to remove currency risk
Public-sector customers pay slowly — budget long receivable cycles into project pricing
For tenders, check whether payment is on delivery or on acceptance, and who guarantees it
Export credit insurance is advisable for first orders and for public buyers

In Senegal a local agent is often not optional for public tenders, and the agent's registration status is checked. Appoint someone with a verifiable track record on comparable tenders rather than the first introducer who offers to help.

9. Risks and timing

Low
Currency — The CFA franc is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate, so euro-invoiced trade carries no exchange risk.
Medium
Payment timing — Public buyers pay slowly and sometimes on acceptance rather than delivery. Price the working-capital cost into project quotations.
Medium
Competition — European, Indian and Turkish suppliers are active, particularly on government-funded projects. Local presence or a strong agent is often decisive.
Medium
Documentation — The conformity certificate and cargo tracking note are both pre-shipment obligations, and tender files add their own requirements on top.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a cargo tracking note for Senegal?

Yes. The bordereau de suivi des cargaisons is mandatory and must be issued before the vessel departs the loading port.

Is there a free trade agreement between China and Senegal?

No. Senegal applies the WAEMU common external tariff. EU-origin goods benefit from the economic partnership agreement.

Do I need a local agent?

For public tenders, usually yes. The tender sets its own requirements, and a local agent with a verifiable track record on comparable work is often decisive.

How much is import VAT?

18% on the customs value plus duty, recoverable by a registered business.

Can I invoice in euro?

Yes, and it is the natural choice because the CFA franc is pegged to the euro.

Which port should I use?

Dakar handles most traffic and also serves landlocked Sahel markets. The new Ndayane deep-water terminal adds capacity — check which terminal your carrier calls at.
