How to Tell if a Brand Design Team Is Reliable: 7 Signals Beyond the Portfolio

A good-looking portfolio is enough? Not necessarily

On Reddit, many entrepreneurs wonder: is the agency exaggerating its project count? Are the showcased cases really theirs? Some even complain that agencies serve too many clients at once and simply can't attend to their brand. A portfolio is just a "facade" — what truly determines the experience are the signals behind it.

7 reliability signals beyond the portfolio

  1. Communication response speed: did they reply within a reasonable time on first inquiry? Slow response often means slow mid-project too.
  2. Process transparency: do they offer direction options, stage feedback, and research-based advice? Be wary of those who only deliver a "final draft."
  3. Clear case role: can they explain exactly what they did in the project? Vague answers usually mean padding.
  4. Clear contract terms: are revisions, copyright, and source files spelled out in black and white?
  5. Dedicated project owner: is there a fixed point of contact, rather than "randomly assigned from a ticket pool"?
  6. Stage confirmation mechanism: does each stage let you confirm before moving on?
  7. Clear asset ownership: after delivery, are source files and licenses fully transferred?

7 questions to ask directly

  • What was your specific role in this case?
  • How many steps in the process, and what's delivered at each?
  • How many revision rounds, and how are overages handled?
  • Who owns copyright and commercial license?
  • Which source files and font licenses are provided?
  • Who is the fixed contact? What is the response time?
  • If you want to adjust direction midway, how is cost calculated?

3 red flags of a padded portfolio

  1. Project count is exaggerated, but they can't explain each one's details.
  2. Showcased cases clearly don't match the team's style, or appear to be others' work.
  3. Refuses to explain "which part you were responsible for."

Why "exclusivity" matters more than fame

A client repeatedly served by a large agency summed it up well: big agencies often struggle to focus on a single brand because they serve too many clients at once, so some brands turn back to small, specialized teams. For growing global brands, "having someone who truly takes your brand seriously" is often more valuable than "a famous name."
