Key Industrial Sectors
Mining and minerals
South Africa is a leading global miner of platinum-group metals from the Bushveld around Rustenburg and Mokopane, gold from the Witwatersrand, and coal from Mpumalanga; iron ore from Sishen and manganese from Hotazel are exported mainly to Asia.
Automotive and components
Vehicle assembly and component plants run by Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, BMW and Isuzu in Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London and Rosslyn produce cars and pickups for domestic buyers and for export to Europe and the rest of Africa; the sector is a flagship of industrial policy.
Chemicals and petrochemicals
Sasol's coal-to-liquids and gas-based plants at Secunda and Sasolburg, together with refineries and chemical works around Durban and Johannesburg, produce fuels, polymers, fertilizers and industrial chemicals that supply domestic industry and export markets across Africa.
Steel and metal fabrication
ArcelorMittal's plants at Vanderbijlpark, Newcastle and Saldanha, with scrap-based mills and foundries, supply steel to construction, mining and automotive customers; the sector is a major employer and a focus of efforts to add value to local iron ore.
Food and beverages
Breweries such as South African Breweries, wineries in the Western Cape, sugar mills in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, and grain, dairy and fruit processors serve a large domestic market and export wine, sugar, fruit and packaged food across Africa and beyond.
