Key Industrial Sectors
Gold and minerals
Gold is Tanzania's leading mineral export, mined at Geita, Bulyanhulu, Buzwagi and North Mara in the Lake Victoria goldfields; the metal is refined and shipped through Mwanza and Dar es Salaam to South Africa, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates, alongside tanzanite from Mererani.
Agriculture and agro-processing
Tobacco, cashew, sisal, coffee, cotton and tea are grown across the southern highlands, the coast and the Lake Zone, with processing plants around Tabora, Morogoro and Mtwara; cashew and tobacco are key exports, while sisal and cotton feed local mills and foreign buyers.
Cement and construction materials
Cement plants such as Twiga, Tanzania Portland and Dangote operate near Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara, supplying a construction sector driven by roads, ports, housing and the standard-gauge railway; steel, roofing and glass are growing import-substituting industries tied to the same building cycle.
Beverages and food processing
Brewing and soft-drink bottling, led by Tanzania Breweries and Serengeti Breweries, plus sugar, edible-oil, flour, dairy and beverage lines, form the core of consumer-goods manufacturing; output serves a large domestic market and exports to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC.
Natural gas and power
Natural gas from the Mnazi Bay and Songo Songo fields off the southern coast fuels power plants and a fertilizer project near Mtwara, and the government is developing the large offshore gas reserves for export; hydropower and grid expansion are central to industrial plans.
