Key Industrial Sectors
Coffee
Coffee is Rwanda's leading agricultural export, grown by smallholders in the hills of Huye, Karongi, Nyamasheke and Gakenke; fully washed arabica is processed at washing stations and shipped to specialty buyers in the United States, Europe and Japan.
Tea
Tea is grown on estates and smallholder plots in the highlands of Nyabihu, Rutsiro, Rulindo and Gicumbi, with factories producing black and green tea for export to Kenya, Pakistan, the United Kingdom and the Middle East; the crop is a major rural employer.
Mining and minerals
Tin, tantalum and tungsten are mined around Gatumba, Nemba and Rutongo in the west and north, with gold from Nyungwe and other sites; concentrates are exported through Kigali and the region, and the government promotes formal, traceable mineral trade.
Cement and construction materials
Cement production, led by the CIMERWA plant near Rusizi in the west, together with imports through Kigali, supplies a construction sector driven by roads, housing and the Kigali Convention Centre; steel, roofing and aggregates are tied to the same building cycle.
Beverages and agro-processing
Brewing and soft-drink bottling, led by Bralirwa's plants in Gisenyi and Kigali, plus dairy, edible-oil, flour and fruit-processing lines, form the core of formal manufacturing; output serves the domestic market and exports to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.
