Key Industrial Sectors
Hydropower and electricity
Nepal's rivers, especially the Trishuli, Kali Gandaki and Tamakoshi, support a growing run-of-river hydropower fleet around Dolakha, Sindhupalchok and Nuwakot; electricity is exported to India in the wet season, and power trade is central to the country's industrial ambitions.
Cement and construction materials
Cement plants in the Kathmandu valley, Chitwan and the Terai near Birgunj supply roads, bridges, hydropower and housing; clinker, steel and machinery are imported from India, and construction materials are among Nepal's largest import categories.
Tea and coffee
Orthodox tea from Ilam, Dhankuta and Panchthar in eastern Nepal and coffee from Gulmi, Palpa and Lalitpur are grown on smallholder plots; both are niche exports to India, Europe and Japan, and processing is small, scattered and short of modern equipment.
Carpets, garments and pashmina
Hand-knotted woolen carpets from Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Pokhara and pashmina shawls and garments are Nepal's leading manufactured exports, sold mainly to the United States, Germany and other European markets; the industries employ large numbers of women and depend on imported yarn and dye.
Food and beverages
Rice milling, edible oil, flour, sugar, breweries and soft drinks are produced around Kathmandu, Biratnagar and Nepalgunj for a large domestic market; food imports, especially from India, remain far larger than local output, and demand for processing and packaging equipment is growing.
