Key Industrial Sectors
Diamonds
Diamonds dominate the economy, mined by Debswana at Jwaneng and Orapa-Letlhakane and sorted, valued and sold through the De Beers Global Sightholder Sales operation in Gaborone; the government is pushing local cutting and polishing to capture more value.
Copper, nickel and base metals
Nickel-copper concentrate from the Selebi-Phikwe and Selkirk mines, smelted at BCL's plant and shipped via South Africa, has long been the second mining pillar; new exploration is targeting copper in the Kalahari Copper Belt near Ghanzi.
Soda ash and salt
Botswana Ash extracts soda ash and salt from the Sua Pan brines near Sowa in the Makgadikgadi, exporting mainly to South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe for glass, detergents and chemicals; the operation is one of the country's largest non-diamond mineral exporters.
Beef and meat processing
The Botswana Meat Commission's abattoir at Lobatse, with a second plant at Maun, slaughters cattle from the Kalahari rangelands and exports chilled beef to the EU and South Africa under strict veterinary controls, making livestock the main agricultural export.
Coal, power and construction
Coal is mined at Morupule near Palapye and burned at the adjacent Morupule B power station, cutting reliance on imported South African electricity; large untapped reserves at Mmamabula are promoted for regional power and coal-to-liquids projects.
