Key Industrial Sectors
Agriculture and agri-processing
Wheat, rice and horticulture underpin rural livelihoods; saffron from Herat, pomegranates from Kandahar and dried fruit and nuts (almonds, pine nuts, raisins) are the leading value-added exports. Processing remains mostly small-scale and manual.
Carpets and handicrafts
Hand-knotted Afghan carpets are the country's best-known manufactured export, marketed through Pakistan and Iran and increasingly direct to buyers abroad. Weaving is a household-based industry concentrated in Andkhoy, Aqcha and the northern provinces.
Mining and mineral resources
Afghanistan holds copper at Mes Aynak and Ainak, iron ore at Hajigak, plus lithium, coal, marble, talc and chromite. Output is dominated by artisanal and small-scale operations, with talc and coal the most reliable earners.
Construction and building materials
Rebuilding of housing, roads and public buildings supports brick kilns, cement imports and small concrete and steel-fabrication yards around Kabul, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Kandahar. Cement is largely imported from neighbouring countries.
Textiles, leather and light manufacturing
Cotton ginning, garment stitching, leather tanning and footwear serve the domestic market, alongside flour milling, edible-oil pressing and soft-drink bottling. Manufacturing value added is small and heavily import-dependent for machinery.
