Reclaimed asphalt pavement is among the largest-volume recyclable materials generated in road maintenance. An asphalt rejuvenator is what makes high-RAP mixes work - here is the why and the how.

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP): The Largest Recyclable Material Stream in Road Maintenance

Reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP, is the material produced by milling and demolishing old roads. It contains aged bitumen binder and old aggregate. In road maintenance and rehabilitation, RAP is one of the largest-volume recyclable materials generated: a single milling project on a mid-size expressway can produce tens of thousands of tonnes. If all of this material were landfilled, it would consume land and waste thousands of tonnes of bitumen binder and high-quality aggregate that took geological time to form. The core value of RAP recycling is simple: turn material that has already been used once back into the raw material for a new road.

RAP Is Not 'Old Stone': Two Components, Only One Ages

A common misconception is that RAP is simply 'old road碎石'. It is not. RAP has two components: old aggregate (crushed stone, sand, and filler) and aged bitumen binder. The aggregate is essentially unchanged by aging — its strength, grading, and cleanliness have been tested by time and are often more stable than newly quarried material. The problem is the bitumen. Over years of service, bitumen loses its lighter fractions (oils) through evaporation and oxidation, and its colloidal structure shifts from sol-gel to gel. The bitumen hardens, becomes brittle, and loses its ability to distribute stresses. This is why RAP needs rejuvenation — it is not the old aggregate that needs treatment, it is the aged bitumen.

The Chemistry of Aged Bitumen: Oxidation, Volatilization, and Colloidal Imbalance

Bitumen aging is a chemical process, not just physical hardening. During service, bitumen is continuously exposed to oxygen, UV radiation, and elevated temperatures, undergoing three types of chemical change. First, oxidation: unsaturated hydrocarbons in the bitumen react with oxygen to form carbonyl and hydroxyl groups, increasing molecular weight and polarity. Second, volatilization: lower-molecular-weight saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons gradually escape at elevated temperatures, increasing the relative concentration of heavy fractions (asphaltenes). Third, colloidal imbalance: bitumen is originally a colloidal dispersion in which asphaltene cores are suspended within a medium of maltenes (resins and oils); as oils decrease and resins condense, asphaltene aggregates grow and the system shifts from sol to gel, losing self-healing capability and low-temperature crack resistance. These three changes together cause the penetration to drop, the softening point to rise, and the ductility to collapse — in short, the bitumen becomes hard and brittle.

Why RAP Cannot Be Used As-Is: Three Bottlenecks at High Inclusion Rates

If RAP is added directly to fresh asphalt mixture without any treatment, three bottlenecks appear. First, stiffness mismatch: aged bitumen can have a softening point 20°C or more above that of fresh bitumen, and at mixing temperatures this can create undispersed lumps of aged bitumen that act as crack initiators under load. Second, workability loss: the viscosity of aged bitumen is far higher than that of fresh bitumen, increasing resistance during mixing and paving and causing segregation and compaction deficiency.

How a Rejuvenator Works: Replenish Light Fractions and Cleave Oxidative Cross-Links

An asphalt rejuvenator is a class of additive specifically designed to restore the performance of aged bitumen. Its mechanism has two parts. First, replenishment of light fractions: the rejuvenator contains a high proportion of aromatic and saturated hydrocarbons that re-insert themselves into the colloidal structure of the aged bitumen, restoring the balance between oils and asphaltenes and shifting the bitumen from gel back to sol-gel. Second, cleavage of oxidative cross-links: aged bitumen contains large-molecule oxidative cross-linked structures (condensed aromatics containing carbonyl and hydroxyl groups); active components in the rejuvenator attack these cross-link bonds, breaking them into smaller molecular fragments and reducing the overall molecular weight and polarity of the bitumen. Together, these two actions restore the penetration, ductility, and softening point of aged bitumen to values approaching those of fresh bitumen.

The 3-in-1 System: Warm-Mix + Modification + Rejuvenation, One Product

The asphalt rejuvenator supported by FangService uses a 3-in-1 design: it functions simultaneously as a warm-mix agent, a performance modifier, and a chemical rejuvenator. As a warm-mix agent, it reduces the mixing and compaction temperature of asphalt mixture from the traditional 170-190°C to 120-140°C — a reduction of about 30-50°C — directly cutting fuel consumption and emissions. As a modifier, it forms a three-dimensional cross-linked network in the rejuvenated bitumen, improving elastic recovery and fatigue life — measured fatigue life reaches over 85% of that of virgin asphalt. As a rejuvenator, it performs the light-fraction replenishment and oxidative cross-link cleavage described above. Having all three functions in one product means the contractor does not need to purchase and add three separate additives, simplifying mix design and site management.

High RAP Inclusion: The Economics and Environmental Case for 60% and Beyond

With the rejuvenator, RAP content can be raised from the conventional 20-30% to over 60%, and trials have demonstrated up to 100% RAP — meaning no fresh bitumen or newly quarried aggregate at all. The economic case is multi-layered. First, bitumen savings: using 60% less fresh bitumen per tonne of mixture saves hundreds of yuan per tonne at current prices. Second, aggregate savings: the old aggregate in RAP is reused directly, eliminating the full cost of quarrying, transporting, and crushing virgin aggregate. Third, energy savings: warm mixing reduces fuel consumption by about 30%. Fourth, carbon reduction: lower energy use plus material savings cut comprehensive carbon emissions by over 30% compared to conventional hot mix. The comprehensive cost is 25-40% lower than conventional hot mix. These are not theoretical projections — they are conservative estimates based on actual project data.

Why Now: Carbon Constraints, Aggregate Price Surge, and Supply-Chain Restructuring

The road industry is at a critical inflection point. Three trends are converging to make high-RAP rejuvenation not just an environmental option but an economic necessity. First, carbon constraints: governments worldwide are introducing carbon emission standards and trading schemes for road construction, and the high energy use and emissions of conventional hot mix are becoming a compliance cost. Second, aggregate price surge: quarrying restrictions and environmental requirements have driven up the price of high-quality virgin aggregate, while the old aggregate in RAP is unaffected. Third, supply-chain restructuring: the global supply of bitumen and aggregate has remained volatile since the pandemic, with frequent price swings, while RAP is a locally available material with stable and predictable supply. In this context, the ability to achieve 60%+ RAP inclusion is no longer a nice-to-have — it is the difference between a profitable project and a losing one.
