Exporting to Tunisia

Tunisia on the world map
A small but genuinely industrial economy with a strong electrical, automotive wiring and mechanical components sector, and a long-standing association agreement with the EU. Import demand is concentrated in industrial inputs. The hard part is not certification but exchange control: imports must be domiciled with a bank before shipment and the dinar is not freely convertible, so payment timing is the main commercial risk.

1. Your category in Tunisia

Pick your category and this section shows what we actually hold for Tunisia: how many potential buyers we have verified, what roles they play in the supply chain, and how well they fit. Switch back to All industries at any time.

Import scale and growth by HS line is not on this page yet. We are wiring the customs statistics for each category and will add them here; until then we quote the figures per enquiry rather than publish an estimate.

“Potential buyers” means the buyers we have verified and listed in our own directory — not every importer in the country. Buyer roles are our own grouping of the roles recorded in that directory. (5 of these records do not yet carry a recorded buyer role.)

2. Entry gate

Tunisia's entry gate has two halves. The technical half is a conformity certificate for regulated goods. The financial half is domiciliation: the import must be registered with a Tunisian bank and the central bank before the goods are shipped, and foreign currency is allocated by that route. Exporters who ship first and ask about payment afterwards regularly wait months.

RequirementStatusWhat it involvesLead timeCostLast verified
Certificate of conformityMandatory (regulated goods)Conformity with the applicable Tunisian standard, verified by an approved body, normally before shipment. Certain categories additionally require an import authorisation from the Ministry of Trade.1–3 weeksPer shipmentPending
Bank domiciliation of the importAlways appliesThe import contract must be domiciled with a Tunisian bank and registered before shipment; this is the route by which foreign currency is allocated. Without it, payment cannot legally leave Tunisia.1–2 weeks before shipmentBank chargesPending
Customs declaration (TTN)Always appliesDeclared by a Tunisian importer through the national trade single window. The commercial invoice, packing list and transport document must match exactly.1–2 daysPendingPending
Tariff (MFN)Always appliesThe weighted-mean applied tariff is not published for this market; the rate must be confirmed line by line at HS-code level.—On customs valuePending
Tariff (preference)Not available for Chinese originTunisia has an association agreement with the EU and preferential arrangements with several Arab and African states, but no free trade agreement with China. Chinese-origin goods pay the MFN rate.——Pending
VATAlways applies19% standard rate, charged on the customs value plus duty. Recoverable by a Tunisian business registered for VAT.—19%Pending
LabellingMandatoryArabic and French labelling with product name, the Tunisian importer's name and address, country of origin and safety information.1–2 weeks—Pending
Tunisia is a genuine industrial market with real demand, but the domiciliation requirement comes before shipment. Treat the bank registration as the first step of the order, not an administrative afterthought — it governs whether you get paid at all.

Certification, tariff and clearance figures change. Every row above carries a verification date, and the current requirement is confirmed with your nominated local agent before each shipment.

3. Buyers and channel partners

Leading buyers and channel partners

Every company below is a real business in Tunisia taken from our own buyer research, and we have verified that its website is reachable. Names and business types are public; decision-makers, direct emails and phone numbers are reserved for members of the Buyer Directory. We are still verifying further channel partners in this market, so this list is shorter than our usual three: rather than pad it with companies we cannot stand behind, it stays as it is and grows as our research continues.

How to use this list: do not mass-mail. Tunisian buyers are technically literate and expect a proper datasheet. The decisive question is not price but whether your commercial terms can be domiciled — lead with that.

4. Demand and import profile

Select your HS code and this block shows the import performance of your own category in Tunisia — not the country's macro numbers.

Import size & growth

Example: imports of this category run at a double-digit share of the market's total and are growing faster than overall imports.

6. Logistics and customs

Main gateways: Rades (Tunis), Sfax, Bizerte, Gabes
Direct Mediterranean services from China typically 25–35 days
Typical clearance 2–4 days once domiciliation and the conformity file are in order
Common hold-ups: import not domiciled before arrival, invoice and transport documents not matching, missing conformity certificate
Port capacity at Rades is tight in peak season; Sfax is often smoother

Clearance-day figures change with congestion and policy; treat as indicative and confirm before quoting.

7. Payment, currency and tax

Dominant method: documentary credit or documentary collection; T/T is used once a relationship exists
The dinar is not freely convertible — payment depends on the bank domiciliation and the central bank's allocation
Invoicing in EUR is the practical norm and simplifies the banking route
Do not ship against a promise of payment: the domiciliation must exist first
Expect longer payment cycles than in the EU, and price the working-capital cost in

Tunisian buyers are technically strong and will read your datasheet properly. The mistake foreign suppliers make is treating the payment formalities as something the buyer will sort out later. Confirm the domiciliation is in place before you book the shipment — the buyer cannot speed it up afterwards.

9. Risks and timing

High
Payment and exchange control — The dinar is not freely convertible and import payments depend on bank domiciliation and central-bank allocation. This is the dominant risk on this market — secure the payment route before shipping.
Medium
Currency — Invoice in EUR to avoid dinar exposure; the dinar is managed and not convertible.
Medium
Competition — European suppliers have preferential access and shorter lead times. Differentiate on technical fit and on being easy to domicile.
Medium
Policy — Trade and currency rules are adjusted periodically through finance laws. Re-check the position before each order.

Frequently asked questions

What is bank domiciliation and why does it matter?

It is the registration of the import contract with a Tunisian bank before shipment, and it is the mechanism by which foreign currency is allocated. Without it, payment cannot legally leave Tunisia — so it must be in place before you ship.

Is there a free trade agreement between China and Tunisia?

No. Tunisia has an association agreement with the EU and preferential arrangements with several Arab and African states. Chinese-origin goods pay the MFN rate.

How much is import VAT?

19% on the customs value plus duty, recoverable by a VAT-registered Tunisian business.

What payment method should I ask for?

Documentary credit or documentary collection for early orders, invoiced in EUR. Confirm the domiciliation exists before booking the shipment.

Which port should I use?

Rades serves Tunis and is the largest, but is tight in peak season. Sfax is often smoother for industrial cargo.

Do I need a conformity certificate?

Yes for regulated goods, verified against the applicable Tunisian standard, normally before shipment. Some categories also need an import authorisation.
