Key Industrial Sectors
Coffee
Coffee is Uganda's leading agricultural export, grown by smallholders across the central, western and eastern regions around Masaka, Mbale, Kasese and Mukono; robusta dominates output, and beans are shipped through Mombasa to the European Union, Sudan and the Middle East.
Oil and gas
Crude oil discovered in the Albertine Graben around Buliisa and Hoima is being developed for export through the East African Crude Oil Pipeline to Tanzania, alongside a refinery planned at Kabaale; the sector is set to transform government revenue and industry.
Cement and construction materials
Cement production, led by plants at Tororo and Hima and by imports, supplies a construction sector driven by roads, hydropower dams, housing and the new oil infrastructure; steel, roofing, glass and aggregates are growing industries tied to the same building boom.
Beverages and food processing
Brewing and soft-drink bottling, led by Nile Breweries and Uganda Breweries, plus grain milling, edible oil, dairy and fruit processing, make up the core of consumer-goods manufacturing; output serves a large domestic market and exports to Kenya, South Sudan, Rwanda and the DRC.
Sugar and agro-processing
Sugar estates and mills at Kakira, Lugazi and Kinyara, together with edible-oil, cotton-ginning and tobacco-processing plants, form a large agro-industrial base; sugar, oil and cotton products are exported mainly to Kenya, the region and the European Union.
