Key Industrial Sectors
Electronics and semiconductors
Semiconductor assembly, testing and electronics manufacturing in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Cebu supply global chip and automotive chains, and electronics account for more than half of merchandise exports; the industry is dominated by foreign firms in the PEZA economic zones.
Nickel and copper mining
Nickel laterite is mined in Surigao del Norte, Palawan and Zambales and shipped mainly to China and Japan for stainless steel, while copper and gold come from Benguet and Masbate; mining is a small but growing earner and a focus of resource policy debate.
Food and beverage processing
Sugar mills in Negros and Batangas, coconut and pineapple processing in Mindanao and Luzon, and breweries and bottlers around Manila and Cebu supply domestic consumers and export coconut oil, tuna, banana and pineapple to the United States, Japan and Europe.
Cement and construction materials
Cement producers such as Holcim, Republic Cement and Cemex operate plants in Rizal, Bulacan, Cebu and Davao for a construction market driven by housing, roads, airports and the Build Better More program; steel, clinker and glass are partly imported, and demand is steady.
Shipbuilding and marine industries
Shipyards in Subic, Batangas and Cebu build and repair bulk carriers, ferries and offshore vessels for Japanese, Korean and domestic owners; shipbuilding has become a leading export industry, supported by a large seafaring workforce and a growing marine services and repair cluster.
