Key Industrial Sectors
Tourism and hospitality
The Adriatic coast around Budva, Kotor, Herceg Novi and Bar, plus mountain resorts in the north, draw millions of visitors a year, making tourism the largest contributor to GDP and a driver of construction.
Hydropower and electricity
Rivers such as the Piva and Morača feed hydropower plants, including the Mratinje dam, alongside the coal-fired plant at Pljevlja, making electricity a major export to neighbouring countries and a priority for investment.
Aluminium and metals
The Kombinat Aluminijuma Podgorica (KAP) smelter and nearby bauxite mines around Nikšić underpin metal production and exports, although the sector has undergone restructuring and changes of ownership in recent years.
Agriculture and food processing
Olive oil, wine, fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat are produced in the Zeta plain, the Lake Skadar basin and the northern highlands, supplying the tourist trade and exporting limited volumes to the EU.
Construction and infrastructure
Roads, tunnels, hotels and the Bar-Boljare motorway drive a sizeable construction sector, supported by local cement and building-materials production and by steady foreign investment in new coastal and mountain resorts.
