Key Industrial Sectors
Hydropower and electricity
Laos exports electricity from dams on the Mekong and its tributaries, including the Nam Theun 2 project in Khammouane, selling most output to Thailand and Vietnam; power sales are the country's largest single source of foreign exchange.
Copper and gold mining
Copper and gold are mined at the Sepon and Phu Kham operations in Savannakhet and Xaisomboun, largely by Chinese and Australian investors; concentrate and doré are exported mainly to China, Vietnam and Thailand, making metals the second pillar of exports.
Cement and construction materials
Cement plants around Vientiane and Savannakhet supply a construction boom driven by dams, roads, the Laos-China railway and special economic zones; steel, aggregates and roofing are largely imported, and demand keeps growing with infrastructure and hydropower investment.
Beverages and food processing
Beerlao, brewed in Vientiane and packaged for export across Southeast Asia, is the country's best-known manufactured good; rice milling, coffee processing around the Bolaven Plateau, sugar and bottled water make up the rest of a small but visible food sector.
Garments and textiles
Garment and textile factories in Vientiane and Savannakhet cut and sew clothing for export to the European Union under duty-free preferences, employing tens of thousands of mostly female workers; the sector relies on imported fabric and remains a leading formal manufacturer.
