Key Industrial Sectors
Hydropower and electricity
Run-of-river plants such as Chukha, Tala and Punatsangchhu generate most of the country's revenue by exporting surplus power to India, with further projects and transmission upgrades planned, and electricity sales to India are the single largest source of government revenue.
Cement and building materials
Cement works at Gomtu and Nganglam, together with stone, sand and timber operations, supply domestic construction and export significant volumes to India and Bangladesh, where demand for building materials continues to grow.
Ferroalloys, carbide and metals
Ferro-silicon, calcium carbide and related metal products made near Phuentsholing for export to Indian industry, drawing on local quartzite, dolomite and low-cost hydropower, and the plants are among the country's largest industrial employers.
Agriculture and agro-processing
Apples, oranges, cardamom, potatoes, ginger and dairy produced in the valleys, with small units making juices, spices and packaged foods for domestic and Indian markets, and fruit exports peak in the autumn harvest season.
Tourism and handicrafts
High-value, low-volume cultural tourism centred on Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, together with weaving, textile and handicraft workshops selling to visitors and export buyers, and tourism policy deliberately targets high-spending, low-impact travellers.
