Key Industrial Sectors
Metal processing and steel
Steel, aluminium and ferroalloys produced at Zenica, Jajce and Mostar supply construction and engineering customers across the region; metalworking remains the single largest industrial employer and export earner. The Zenica steelworks and Mostar smelter anchor the sector.
Automotive components
Bosnia and Herzegovina hosts a growing tier-1 and tier-2 supplier base, with plants in Visoko, Sarajevo and Banja Luka making wiring harnesses, seats and metal parts for German and Austrian carmakers.
Wood processing and furniture
Abundant forests support sawmills, panel makers and furniture factories in the Una-Sana and central regions; sawn timber, boards and finished furniture are exported mainly to the EU and the Middle East.
Energy and mining
Coal-fired plants and hydropower stations on the Neretva and Drina rivers generate electricity for domestic use and export, while lignite, iron ore and bauxite mines supply regional industry. Electricity is also a notable export, sold to Croatia and Serbia.
Food processing and textiles
Dairy, meat, fruit and vegetable processing plus a legacy textile and footwear sector serve domestic consumers and neighbouring markets, with production centred on Tuzla, Brčko and Mostar. Agro-processing benefits from EU trade preferences and is a priority for foreign investment.
