Exporting to Tajikistan

Tajikistan on the world map
Tajikistan is the hardest of the Central Asian markets to serve directly: it is not in the EAEU, so it runs its own tariff schedule and its own certification route through Tajikstandard. The market is small, foreign exchange is tight and import financing is a genuine constraint, so payment terms matter as much as price. Logistics are the other brake — the country is landlocked and the main access is by rail through Uzbekistan or the seasonal Kulma road over the Pamirs. Best suited to power equipment and components sold to established importers with their own distribution, not to speculative shipments.

1. Your category in Tajikistan

Pick your category and this section shows what we actually hold for Tajikistan: how many potential buyers we have verified, what roles they play in the supply chain, and how well they fit. Switch back to All industries at any time.

Import scale and growth by HS line is not on this page yet. We are wiring the customs statistics for each category and will add them here; until then we quote the figures per enquiry rather than publish an estimate.

“Potential buyers” means the buyers we have verified and listed in our own directory — not every importer in the country. Buyer roles are our own grouping of the roles recorded in that directory.

2. Entry gate

Tajikistan is the outlier in Central Asia: it is not a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, so it applies its own tariff schedule and its own conformity system rather than the EAEU rulebook. No EAC mark is required, but a Tajik conformity certificate issued through Tajikstandard is, and it does not transfer to neighbouring countries. The sequencing trap is logistics: the country is landlocked with no direct rail link to China, so goods normally enter by rail through Uzbekistan or over the Kulma road, and the paperwork has to be right before they reach the border.

RequirementStatusWhat it involvesLead timeCostLast verified
Tajik conformity certificateMandatory (listed goods)Products in scope require a certificate or declaration of conformity issued under the national system administered by Tajikstandard. Because Tajikistan is not an EAEU member, an EAC certificate does not substitute for it, and the Tajik certificate is not valid in the union.PendingPendingPending
Customs declaration and importer registrationAlways appliesGoods are declared by an importer registered with the Tajik customs authority using the national customs tariff. Declarations are filed at the border crossing or an inland terminal.PendingPendingPending
Importer of recordAlways appliesA non-resident seller cannot normally act as importer of record. Appoint a Tajik importer or resident representative able to hold the customs registration and the conformity documents.PendingPendingPending
Tariff (MFN)Always appliesAverage applied MFN tariff around 5.9%; the rate depends on the HS line and must be confirmed line by line at HS-code level.—On customs valuePending
Tariff (preference)Not availableThere is no free trade agreement between China and Tajikistan, so Chinese-origin goods pay the national most-favoured-nation tariff. Tajikistan is not in the EAEU, so the EAEU common external tariff does not apply either.——Pending
VATAlways applies15% standard rate, charged on the customs value plus duty at the point of import. A VAT-registered Tajik importer can normally offset import VAT against output VAT.—15%Pending
LabellingMandatoryThe state language is Tajik; Russian is widely used in commerce and generally accepted on trade documentation. Labels should carry the product name, manufacturer and importer, country of origin and safety information. There is no EAC regime here, so no EAC mark applies.Pending—Pending
Tajikistan is a small, difficult market that rewards preparation more than ambition. The two things to settle first are the Tajik conformity certificate through Tajikstandard — an EAC certificate will not work here — and a payment structure that protects you in a tight foreign-exchange environment. If neither can be resolved, the order is not worth taking.

Certification, tariff and clearance figures change. Every row above carries a verification date, and the current requirement is confirmed with your nominated local agent before each shipment.

3. Buyers and channel partners

Leading buyers and channel partners

We have not yet completed verification of channel partners in Tajikistan. Rather than list companies we cannot stand behind, this block stays empty. The Buyer Directory is expanded market by market, and Tajikistan is on the list — write to us and we will share what we hold offline.

How to use this list: do not mass-mail. The market is small and relationship-led, and a resident agent who already holds the customs registration and the Tajikstandard documents is worth more than a long list of names. Lead with the technical file, the conformity route and a payment structure the buyer can actually fund.

4. Demand and import profile

Select your HS code and this block shows the import performance of your own category in Tajikistan — not the country's macro numbers.

Example: imports of this category run at a double-digit share of the market's total and are growing faster than overall imports.

6. Logistics and customs

Main gateways: rail via Uzbekistan to Dushanbe, or the Kulma road crossing from China over the Pamir plateau
Tajikistan is landlocked and has no direct rail link to China, so routing through a third country adds transit time and documentation
Typical clearance depends on a complete Tajik conformity file and a correct customs declaration
Common hold-ups: conformity documents issued to the wrong holder, HS classification disputes, and payment or FX documentation
The Kulma route is seasonal — snow closes or slows the high passes in winter, so plan rail as the year-round option

Clearance and transit times change with border congestion, weather and policy; treat as indicative and confirm before quoting.

7. Payment, currency and tax

Dominant method: T/T with a deposit, or full prepayment for a first order with a new supplier
L/C is used for larger orders but is less common; confirm the opening bank and terms before quoting
Settlement is normally in USD; the somoni (TJS) is the local currency and is not freely traded outside the country
Foreign exchange is tight, so buyers may need time to obtain hard currency — build this into the delivery schedule
Credit terms are short; long open-account arrangements are unusual and carry real payment risk

Business runs through personal relationships and a resident agent, and cold approaches rarely progress. Tajik buyers will negotiate hard on price and then need time to arrange foreign currency, so treat the payment schedule as part of the negotiation, not an afterthought. Avoid committing to a delivery date before the FX and conformity steps are confirmed.

9. Risks and timing

High
Currency — Foreign exchange is tight and the somoni is not freely convertible. Confirm how and when the buyer will obtain hard currency before agreeing terms.
High
Payment — Delays in obtaining dollars and limited bank lines mean open-account terms are best avoided. Prefer a deposit or prepayment on first orders.
Medium
Logistics — Routing depends on transit through Uzbekistan and a seasonal mountain crossing, which can add weeks. Build slack into the delivery schedule.
Medium
Policy — Tajikistan is outside the EAEU, so rules are national and can change independently; conformity and tariff decisions sit with domestic authorities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need EAC certification for Tajikistan?

No. Tajikistan is not a member of the EAEU, so the EAC mark does not apply. Products in scope need a national certificate or declaration of conformity issued through Tajikstandard, and that certificate is not valid in the EAEU.

Can I be the importer of record?

Generally no. A non-resident seller cannot normally act as importer of record; appoint a Tajik importer or resident representative who holds the customs registration and the conformity documents.

What is the import duty?

Chinese-origin goods pay the national most-favoured-nation tariff, with a weighted average around 5.9%. Tajikistan is not in the EAEU, so the EAEU common external tariff does not apply. Confirm the rate for your HS line.

How much is VAT on imports?

15%, charged on the customs value plus duty. A VAT-registered importer can normally offset it against output VAT.

Which route should I ship on?

Tajikistan is landlocked with no direct rail link to China. The usual route is rail via Uzbekistan to Dushanbe; the alternative is the Kulma road over the Pamirs, which is seasonal and slower in winter.

How should I structure payment?

T/T with a deposit is the norm, settled in USD. Because foreign exchange is tight, agree the payment schedule early and expect the buyer to need time to obtain dollars. L/C is possible for larger orders but less common.
