Exporting to Chile

Chile on the world map
One of the most open and rule-based markets in Latin America, and the China–Chile FTA is the single biggest advantage: most of your lines enter at zero duty with a valid certificate of origin. The real gate is product safety — SEC certification is mandatory for listed electrical goods and cannot be improvised at the port. Customs procedure is predictable and the peso is freely convertible, so payment and clearance risk are low. Best suited to power electronics, storage and test equipment sold through a technically capable importer. A weak market for unbranded consumer goods with no local service.

1. Your category in Chile

Pick your category and this section shows what we actually hold for Chile: how many potential buyers we have verified, what roles they play in the supply chain, and how well they fit. Switch back to All industries at any time.

Import scale and growth by HS line is not on this page yet. We are wiring the customs statistics for each category and will add them here; until then we quote the figures per enquiry rather than publish an estimate.

“Potential buyers” means the buyers we have verified and listed in our own directory — not every importer in the country. Buyer roles are our own grouping of the roles recorded in that directory. (10 of these records do not yet carry a recorded buyer role.)

2. Entry gate

Chile applies a low most-favoured-nation tariff and the China–Chile FTA takes most industrial lines to zero, so duty is rarely the obstacle. The gate is technical: the SEC requires safety certification for a defined list of electrical products, and some categories need the PE certification procedure with the SEC mark affixed before sale. The sequencing trap is to ship first and certify later — goods without the required SEC approval can be held or rejected at the port. Line up the importer and the certification route before the first container.

RequirementStatusWhat it involvesLead timeCostLast verified
SEC safety certificationMandatory (listed goods)The Superintendencia de Electricidad y Combustibles (SEC) requires safety certification for a defined list of electrical and fuel products. Certain categories follow the PE certification procedure and must carry the SEC mark before they can be sold.PendingPendingPending
Importer registrationAlways appliesThe importer must be registered with the Servicio Nacional de Aduanas and hold a RUT tax number. Registration sits with the local importer, not with the overseas seller.PendingPendingPending
Importer of recordAlways appliesImport declarations must be filed by a Chilean-established importer of record. A foreign seller cannot act as importer of record without a local entity, so appoint a distributor or set one up.PendingPendingPending
Tariff (MFN)Always appliesAverage applied MFN tariff around 1.0%; the rate depends on the HS line and must be confirmed line by line at HS-code level.—On customs valuePending
Tariff (preference)Available (China–Chile FTA)The China–Chile Free Trade Agreement, in force since 2006 and upgraded by a protocol in 2019, takes the large majority of Chinese-origin industrial lines to 0% preferential duty when a valid certificate of origin is presented. Without that certificate the shipment pays the most-favoured-nation rate.——Pending
VATAlways applies19% IVA is charged on the CIF value plus duty at the point of import. A VAT-registered Chilean importer can credit it against output tax, so it is normally recoverable rather than a real cost.—19%Pending
LabellingMandatoryLabels must be in Spanish and carry product identification, the importer's details and any applicable safety warnings. Electrical products covered by SEC rules must also show the SEC mark.PendingPendingPending
Chile is one of the easier markets to enter on cost — duty is largely eliminated by the FTA — so the deciding factor is technical compliance. Confirm whether your product is on the SEC certification list and secure the certificate of origin before shipping. Do those two things and the customs side is routine.

Certification, tariff and clearance figures change. Every row above carries a verification date, and the current requirement is confirmed with your nominated local agent before each shipment.

3. Buyers and channel partners

Leading buyers and channel partners

We have not yet completed verification of channel partners in Chile. Rather than list companies we cannot stand behind, this block stays empty. The Buyer Directory is expanded market by market, and Chile is on the list — write to us and we will share what we hold offline.

How to use this list: do not mass-mail. Chilean purchasing is technical and specification-led — state your certification status and whether your product needs SEC approval in the first email. A distributor who already handles SEC-certified products and can use the FTA certificate of origin is worth more than a larger buyer who cannot.

4. Demand and import profile

Select your HS code and this block shows the import performance of your own category in Chile — not the country's macro numbers.

Example: imports of this category run at a double-digit share of the market's total and are growing faster than overall imports.

6. Logistics and customs

Main gateways: San Antonio (largest container port) and Valparaiso, with the Iquique free zone serving northern trade
Direct Asia–Chile sailings from Chinese ports typically run 30–40 days
Typical clearance 2–4 days with a complete customs and SEC file
Common hold-ups: missing certificate of origin, SEC approval not yet issued, or HS classification disputes
Seasonal congestion around Chinese New Year and the southern-hemisphere summer peak can add several days

Clearance-day figures change with congestion and policy; treat as indicative and confirm before quoting.

7. Payment, currency and tax

Dominant method: T/T, commonly 30% deposit with the balance against copy of B/L
L/C at sight is available and used for larger or first orders; established buyers move to open account
Invoicing in USD is standard and the Chilean peso is freely convertible
60–90 day terms are common for established suppliers — price them in or insure the receivable
Import IVA is creditable for a VAT-registered importer, so it is not a final cost to your buyer

Chilean buyers are direct and expect a clear technical offer with certification status stated up front. The mistake that costs most time is presenting an SEC-regulated product without knowing whether it needs certification — the buyer will check, and an unclear answer stalls the deal.

9. Risks and timing

Medium
Currency — The peso floats against the dollar. For long-dated orders invoice in USD or hedge, rather than leaving the exposure open.
Medium
Competition — Chinese suppliers are already the leading source of many industrial lines, and US, Brazilian and European brands compete on service. Compete on specification and certification readiness, not price alone.
Low
Policy — Chile is one of the region's most stable and rules-based economies, with a long-standing FTA with China. The main variables are domestic political cycles and regulatory updates, not abrupt trade barriers.
Medium
Compliance drift — SEC certification lists and technical requirements are revised over time. Treat certification as a recurring cost, not a one-off.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need SEC certification for my product?

It depends on the product. The SEC maintains a list of electrical and fuel products that require safety certification, and some categories follow the PE certification procedure and must carry the SEC mark. Check your product against the current list before quoting — goods without the required approval can be held at the port.

Can I be the importer of record myself?

Not without a Chilean presence. Customs requires an importer registered in Chile and holding a RUT tax number. Most exporters use a local distributor as importer of record, or set up a Chilean entity if volume justifies it.

What is the import duty on my product?

Chile applies a low most-favoured-nation tariff, with a weighted mean around 1.03%. Under the China–Chile FTA most industrial lines enter at 0% when you present a valid certificate of origin. Without that certificate the MFN rate applies.

How much is VAT on imports?

19% IVA, charged on the CIF value plus duty. A VAT-registered importer can credit it against output tax, so it is normally recoverable rather than a real cost.

Which port should I ship to?

San Antonio handles the largest share of container traffic and is the usual first choice, with Valparaiso as an alternative. For northern trade the Iquique free zone offers its own advantages.

How should payment be arranged?

T/T with a deposit and the balance against copy of B/L is standard. L/C at sight is used for larger or first orders. Invoicing in USD is normal and the peso is freely convertible.
