Exporting to Indonesia

Indonesia on the world map
The largest economy in Southeast Asia, with a large domestic market and a free trade agreement with China that can bring qualifying goods to 0% duty. Against that, Indonesia operates one of the more restrictive import regimes in the region: a wide range of products need SNI certification, many need an import approval before shipment, and the restricted-goods list changes with policy priorities. Best suited to suppliers who will work through a licensed importer and keep their approvals current.

1. Your category in Indonesia

Pick your category and this section shows what we actually hold for Indonesia: how many potential buyers we have verified, what roles they play in the supply chain, and how well they fit. Switch back to All industries at any time.

Import scale and growth by HS line is not on this page yet. We are wiring the customs statistics for each category and will add them here; until then we quote the figures per enquiry rather than publish an estimate.

“Potential buyers” means the buyers we have verified and listed in our own directory — not every importer in the country. Buyer roles are our own grouping of the roles recorded in that directory. (9 of these records do not yet carry a recorded buyer role.)

2. Entry gate

Indonesia's gate is the import-approval system. Products in regulated categories need SNI certification, radio equipment needs SDPPI type approval, and many categories additionally require an import approval obtained by the importer before shipment. The restricted list is reviewed periodically, so a route that worked last year may need re-checking.

RequirementStatusWhat it involvesLead timeCostLast verified
SNI certificationMandatory (regulated products)Certification against the applicable Standar Nasional Indonesia, with a certificate of conformity and the right to apply the SNI mark. Testing is normally carried out in Indonesia, and factory audits are required for some product groups.8–20 weeksPendingPending
SDPPI type approvalMandatory (radio / telecom)Radio and telecommunications equipment requires type approval from the communications ministry's SDPPI directorate, applied for through a local entity. Local testing is generally required.6–12 weeksPendingPending
Importer licence and import approvalAlways appliesThe importer needs an API-U import licence and, for regulated categories, an import approval issued before shipment. The customs declaration cannot be filed without the applicable approvals.2–8 weeksPendingPending
Tariff (MFN)Always appliesAverage applied MFN tariff around 5.8%; the rate depends on the HS line and must be confirmed line by line at HS-code level.—On customs valuePending
Tariff (ACFTA / RCEP)To claim the preferenceThe ASEAN–China free trade area is in force. With a valid Form E certificate of origin, qualifying Chinese-origin goods can enter at 0% or a reduced rate. Indonesia also participates in RCEP. Confirm the origin rule for your HS line.3–5 days—Pending
VATAlways applies11% standard rate (PPN), charged on the customs value plus duty, plus an income tax prepayment at import for most categories. The VAT is recoverable by a registered business; the prepayment is credited against the importer's income tax liability.—11% PPN + income-tax prepaymentPending
LabellingMandatoryLabels in Bahasa Indonesia with product name, the importer's name and address, country of origin, net content and safety information. Regulated products must carry the SNI mark.2–4 weeks—Pending
Indonesia combines an attractive tariff position with a demanding import regime. Check the restricted-goods list and the import-approval requirement for your product before quoting, and budget the certification lead time — it is longer here than elsewhere in ASEAN.

Certification, tariff and clearance figures change. Every row above carries a verification date, and the current requirement is confirmed with your nominated local agent before each shipment.

How to use this list: do not mass-mail. Indonesian import policy moves faster than in its neighbours, so work with a licensed importer who tracks the restricted-goods list. Confirm your product is importable and your approval route exists before you quote a price.

4. Demand and import profile

Select your HS code and this block shows the import performance of your own category in Indonesia — not the country's macro numbers.

Import size & growth

Example: imports of this category run at a double-digit share of the market's total and are growing faster than overall imports.

6. Logistics and customs

Main gateways: Tanjung Priok (Jakarta), Tanjung Perak (Surabaya), Belawan (Medan)
Direct sailings from China typically 7–15 days
Typical clearance 3–8 days; longer where import approvals are queried
Common hold-ups: import approval not obtained before shipment, SNI certificate missing, label not in Bahasa Indonesia, restricted-goods list changes
Jakarta road congestion affects inland delivery significantly; plan around it

Clearance-day figures change with congestion and policy; treat as indicative and confirm before quoting.

7. Payment, currency and tax

Dominant method: T/T with a deposit, or documentary credit for larger orders
The rupiah is freely traded but has been volatile; consider USD invoicing
Open account at 30–90 days is common once a relationship is established
Local import financing is available and buyers may ask for extended terms
Confirm who bears the income-tax prepayment at import, as it affects the buyer's cash flow and therefore their price expectations

8. Localisation and communication

Indonesia's restricted-goods list and import-approval rules change with policy priorities, sometimes at short notice. Do not reuse last year's import plan as a template — confirm the current position for your HS line before each order, and work with an importer who tracks the changes.

9. Risks and timing

High
Import policy — The restricted-goods list and import-approval requirements change periodically and have been tightened in recent years. Re-verify the position for your HS line before each order.
High
Compliance lead time — SNI certification and SDPPI approval can take three to five months. Plan the market entry around that rather than around the first enquiry.
Medium
Currency — The rupiah is freely traded but has been volatile. Consider USD invoicing or hedging.
Medium
Logistics — Jakarta congestion and inland road conditions can add days. Build buffer into delivery commitments.

Frequently asked questions

Does my product need SNI certification?

For regulated product groups, yes. Certification is against the applicable Indonesian standard, testing is normally carried out in Indonesia, and factory audits are required for some groups.

Do I need an import approval?

Do I get 0% duty under the ASEAN–China agreement?

Qualifying Chinese-origin goods can enter at 0% or a reduced rate with a valid Form E certificate of origin. The origin rule must be met for your HS line.

What tax is charged on imports?

11% VAT on the customs value plus duty, plus an income-tax prepayment for most categories. The VAT is recoverable; the prepayment is credited against income tax.

What about radio equipment?

Radio and telecom equipment requires SDPPI type approval, applied for through a local entity, with local testing generally required.

Do labels have to be in Bahasa Indonesia?

Yes. Labels must be in Bahasa Indonesia with the importer's details, origin and safety information, plus the SNI mark for regulated products.
