The most important industrial sectors
Livestock and meat exports
Livestock is Somalia's most important export. Camels, cattle, sheep and goats are raised across Somaliland and Puntland and shipped live from the ports of Berbera and Bosaso to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. Trade dominates foreign exchange earnings.
Fishing and seafood
Somalia has one of the longest coastlines in Africa, with rich tuna, mackerel and lobster fish found off Puntland and the Horn of Africa. The local catch is small, exports go mainly to the Gulf and Yemen, and foreign fleets and licensed ships account for a large portion of the catch.
Agriculture and sesame
Sesame, bananas and sorghum are grown along the Shabelle and Jubba rivers in southern Somalia, and sesame is exported to China, India and the Gulf. Agriculture remains dependent on rain and is affected by conflict, so production is far below the country's potential.
Ports and commercial services
The ports of Mogadishu, Berbera, Bosaso and Kismayo handle livestock, food and fuel imports and serve landlocked Ethiopia; Berbera, modernized by DP World, is emerging as a regional transshipment hub, and port fees are a major source of revenue.
Communications and money transfer
Private telecom companies, such as Hormuud and Golis, operate mobile networks and money transfer systems Zaad and EVC Plus that replace banks. This sector is among the most advanced in the region and supports trade, remittances and small businesses.
