Key Industrial Sectors
Tobacco
Tobacco is Malawi's leading export crop, grown by smallholders in the central and northern districts around Kasungu, Mchinji and Mzimba; leaf is auctioned in Lilongwe and exported to Europe, Asia and the United States as the country's main foreign-exchange earner.
Tea
Tea is grown on estates and smallholder plots in the Thyolo and Mulanje highlands in the south, with factories processing green and black leaf for export to the United Kingdom, South Africa and other markets; the crop is a major employer and export earner.
Sugar
Sugar is produced at mills at Dwangwa and Nchalo, run by Illovo Sugar Malawi, which supply domestic consumers and export to Kenya, Uganda and Europe; the estates also generate electricity from bagasse and support thousands of smallholder cane growers.
Cement and construction materials
Cement production, led by the plant at Njereza in Mangochi and imports of clinker through the port at Nkhata Bay and Beira in Mozambique, feeds a construction sector in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu; road and housing projects keep demand firm.
Beverages and food processing
Brewing and soft-drink bottling, led by Carlsberg's plant in Blantyre, plus edible-oil, flour, dairy and tea-packing lines, form the core of formal manufacturing; output serves the domestic market with some exports to Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
