Key Industrial Sectors
Natural gas and pipelines
Offshore gas fields in the Andaman Sea, including Yadana and Yetagun, feed pipelines to Thailand and to Yangon, and gas sales are Myanmar's largest export earner; the sector is dominated by state and foreign partners and supplies both power plants and export revenue.
Jade and gemstones
Jade, ruby and sapphire are mined in Kachin State around Hpakant and in Mogok and Mong Hsu in Shan State, and sold mainly through the Myanmar Gems Emporium in Naypyidaw; gem exports go largely to China and Thailand and remain an opaque but valuable earner.
Garments and textiles
Cut-make-pack garment factories in Yangon and around Hlaing Tharyar sew shirts, jackets and knitwear for European and Japanese brands under the EU's Everything But Arms scheme; the sector employs hundreds of thousands and is the leading manufactured export.
Cement and construction materials
Cement plants near Yangon, Mandalay and Thayet supply a construction market driven by roads, bridges, special economic zones and housing; steel, glass and roofing are largely imported, and demand is closely tied to infrastructure spending and to the Thilawa and Kyaukphyu projects.
Rice and food processing
Rice milling, edible oil, sugar and pulses processing are spread across the delta and the dry zone; beans, pulses, rice and rubber are exported mainly to India, China and the Middle East, and food processing still relies on imported machinery and packaging.
