Key Industrial Sectors
Fisheries and seafood processing
Cod, haddock, capelin and salmon are caught and processed in Reykjavík, Akureyri and the Westman Islands, making fish and seafood products the country's largest merchandise export by value and a pillar of coastal employment.
Aluminium smelting and metals
Cheap geothermal and hydropower feed three smelters at Grundartangi, Straumsvík and Reyðarfjörður, where Alcoa, Century Aluminum and Rio Tinto produce aluminium mainly for European and North American customers, making aluminium the leading manufactured export.
Geothermal and renewable energy
Iceland generates almost all of its electricity and heating from geothermal and hydro sources, and exports engineering know-how through firms that design and build power plants and district-heating systems abroad.
Tourism and hospitality
Volcanic landscapes, glaciers and the Blue Lagoon draw visitors to Reykjavík, the south coast and the north, making tourism the largest service export and a driver of construction, transport and retail demand.
Software, data centres and life sciences
Reykjavík hosts growing software, gaming and biotechnology clusters, while abundant cheap green power attracts data centres and firms such as deCODE genetics, which serve international healthcare and technology markets worldwide.
