When struck, metals absorb energy through plastic deformation, while ceramics barely deform plastically. Their high strength and high hardness blunt or even shatter the projectile, and as the ceramic itself is crushed it absorbs the kinetic energy of the high-velocity projectile, reducing the damage to the body or object behind it.
The ballistic ceramic is supplied in three quality grades: premium (Al₂O₃ 99.5%, density ≥3.90 g/cm³, hardness ≥1,550 HV5, flexural strength 380 MPa), first (99.0%, ≥3.88 g/cm³, ≥1,500 HV5, 350 MPa) and qualified (98.0%, ≥3.80 g/cm³, ≥1,400 HV5, 320 MPa), all with impact toughness of 2.2 J/cm². Typical uses are hard armour plates and body armour for personal protection, and protective components for military and police equipment programmes. Specific protection levels (such as NIJ, GA or STANAG) are confirmed against the drawings, ballistic testing and test report agreed by both parties.
